Watch Celtic Woman Perform O, America!

Welcome to 'O, America!' from Celtic Woman

In tribute to pursuing the American dream and due to overwhelming demand from our fans, Celtic Woman are delighted to announce that we will release the inspiring and emotional song 'O, America!' as a digital download and ringtune on June 23rd.

'O, America!' was written by Brendan Graham and William Joseph exclusively for Celtic Woman. It has been a highlight of our current 75-date Isle of Hope US concert tour.

As our youngest member Chloe explained at a recent concert,

"'O, America!' is a dedication to you to thank you for being the first country to embrace us as Celtic Woman. We feel as though we are part of your family now and for that we are very honored and proud. You are our true inspiration!"

As your new President Barack Obama eloquently said 'We know that there are some things we can't do on our own. We know that there are some things we do better together'

So tell us here how Celtic Woman and the song O America! has inspired you and maybe your words will inspire others.

  1. Chloe's introduction to the song is beautiful and moving. No one could deliver that lovely statement as charmingly as she does.

But really, shouldn't the title be "Oh, America," not "O America?"

I can hear YOU calling me:
YOU are calling me to be true to THEE,
True to THEE I will be.
      O, Israel you're weeping,
Let ME heal your wounded heart.
I will keep you in MY keeping,
Till there be a new start.
And I will answer you, and I will take your hand,
And lead you to the SON:
And I will stand by you do all that I can do,
And WE will be as one.
      O, Israel I hear you,
From your prairies to the sea,
From your mountains grand, and all through this land,
      You are beautiful to me.
      And O, Messiah you're calling,

    3. Thanks for this. Having listened many times to this beautifully rendered moving song I have also just realised that it speaks also about God. Without any alteration at all it could be taken as God speaking to America and reminding them that he promises to stick with them whatever ( "I [God] will ever answer thee [America]" ). A point worth remembering, not just in America but also in the rest of our troubled world.

  2. I had heard from forum members about this fantastic song and it really moved me the first time I saw it on you tube. Can't wait for the download.

It is a fantastic song and deserving to be played everywhere.

  6. "O America" is fabulous in so many ways. These women demostrate so easily their love for America...seems as though they love America more than us Americans do. When I heard them sing this song at their concert, they were overflowing with emotion; I could feel it so strongly. I usually don't get emotional about patriotic songs, but this one is definitely an exception. Celtic Woman is a wonderful group, and they put all they have into this song. AMAZING!

  7. Thank you Celtic Woman for making "Oh America" available.

I first had the pleasure of experiencing this song in Evansville and after repeat performances in Chicago and Louisville, I was hooked.

This is one of the highlights for me with the current "Isle of Hope" tour and hope that everyone has the opportunity to experience "Oh America" live, this is a very emotionally charged song.

    Thanks again,

PS, I cannot wait for the "Isle of Hope" tour to visit Ohio in June

  8. This song is amazing! I don't know how they do it, but Celtic Woman is able to reach in and touch my heart with every song they sing. When I hear this song I am reminded to be a better person and do my best in all that I do. What a huge gift Celtic Woman along with Brendan Graham and William Joseph have given us. Thank you all.

  9. I first saw C.W. a few years ago. And the music struck me as so beautiful, I was brought to tears.
That had never happened before, with music. Since then, I have seen C.W. in concert now 3 times, and I have met a group of people, I now consider part of my family.
To say these Dear Ladies have had a profound effect on my life, is an understatement. I have felt so indebted to them, and now comes “Oh America.” And, I am again brought to tears.
To the ladies, and to everyone that is and has ever, been involved with this incredible group.
From the deepest depths of my heart...
    Thank you.

  10. O, America is a beautiful, inspirational tribute to our great country. It's touching to hear such a heartfelt testament to our spirit, especially from a group from another country. In a difficult time for us, I hope that all Americans remember to exhibit the strength, pride and honor attributed to us in this song.

Looking forward to this week's concert in WPB!

  12. The despora of Eire welcome Celtic Woman and thank you for such a moving and elegant presentation that honours our country. In an era of music that reflects the often hard and cold sides of our society, it is refreshing to hear voices that pay tribute to a land that begrudgingly accepted the Irish yet reaped the rewards of their efforts. As the Irish saved Europes history from the dark ages, the Celtic Woman tours remind America of our heritage and that beauty exists in many forms. A standing ovation is deserved and freely given to Celtic Woman.

  13. I first saw C.W. because a friend of mine show me a video of Mairead playing The Butterfly, and I play violin too (not so good as she does, but I try). Obviously, I couldn't believe in my eyes. How could a violinist play and dance like her? After, I looked for more information about that group, and ran to get the DVD. The first DVD I saw was A New Journey, and Caledonia still makes me cry. This song is beatiful as Lisa.
I just have see O America, and if I was there, watching that show, I would cry too. Such an amazing song! Congratulations for you. Hope you keep doing songs that makes me love even more my violin, and celtic music.

  16. I feel the most emotional part of the song "O America" is that it is delivered by four women who are Irish. All American's came from somewhere else around the world. Each of us have a history that goes back to some Grandparent making the difficult journey to a land that provided "Hope" of a better life for their posterity.
It hit home even harder for myself and for those who joined me at the concert in Utah. I'm a fifth generation Utahn. My family was driven here after years of persecution because of their religious beliefs. Even though we live in a country were we have the right to believe how and what we want to. Our Country in it's infancy has lacked the ability to exercise tolerance toward one another for our differences. Something that even day is still difficult.
But - what unites us as a country is that we are a melting pot. We are made up of people from all over this world. And the vast majority of us still remember the blood sacrifices made for us to continue to live in a Country filled with freedom. The song "O America" draws our hearts together, it unites us and helps us remember once again that our freedom was bought on the backs of those willing to loose their lives for us, and those willing to sacrifice their homeland, their roots, and all they had to come to this land and start with nothing so that we may have everthing.
Is the song "O America" inspiring? Absolutely! Absolutely!

  17. What can you NOT say about this song, this group of extrodinary women? Forgive me, my Grammer is not the greatest. When i first walked into the Isle of Hope tour i stopped dead in shock and wonder. The set was so simply elegant(trust me that was an illusion nothing "simple" about it) When this song came on, as with many others, i ound tears slipping down my cheeks half unnoticed. Some songs made me laugh, some obviously made me cry, if one listens to Celtic Woman for aught else, there is power in the words they sing, or play. i've heard Meiread called the Faerie Fiddler and i must wholeheartedly agree. If i could, i would go back and see them almost every night. i'm sure i wouldn't get tired of it but they might. This song is incredibly moving, as well as the title track, Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears. Thank you, to Celtic Woman, their crew, staff, and for me down in here in cajun country thank you LPB. Because of all of the hard work put into this show, i had a time i shall never forget. My first true concert. THank you all again.

  19. Celtic Woman is a household name for us. We saw them in concert here in Dallas last year with our two oldest children, and again this year my husband and I went. When they sang the song O America it brought with it such emotions and tears to my eyes of gratitude. It truely touched our souls. I am excited to view it again and relive the beautiful song they sang. They are an incredibly talented group. The pictures and music put together brought my heartfelt emotions of my ancestors to life. It gave me strength to hear their words sung for us, the U.S. It was wonderful to get support from one country to another. Thank you Celtic Woman!!

  21. I get shivers and tears every time O, America is played. I saw Celtic Woman for the first time this year in St. Paul, MN, with my mom. Chloe introduced the song, and I knew right away it would be special. That doesn't even describe its awesomeness. We silently wept, and I saw many tears around me, too. Celtic Woman you continue the great honor and legacy of the people of Ireland. I listen in utter humility that you would have a song written just for America, her people. Thank you for sharing your heart with us; you have hit a nerve deep within me. As a former US Marine, I am so proud of you, and the United States of America.

The standing ovation you received truly showed the love that the American people have for all of you. May God keep all of you in His Tender Care ALWAYS!!! It easily could be made to fit our current unprecedented situation...with eyes from around the world watching america and how we handle this pandemic and economic crisis. Various musicians from all genres could tele sing and harmonize as we are all in this together, reacing for the sun and healing.

  33. Celtic Woman is the only event that I look forward to from year to year.
As Celtic Woman was performing “O, America”, the tears just started streaming down my face.

For the last eight years I have felt incredible anger about 9/11, the former administration, the economy, and have worried about whether I will continue to having a job. What I have realized is all this pent up anger is covering up an incredible deep sadness for me and all Americans. “America is weeping.”

What Celtic Woman has done, through their incredible talent and brilliance, is splintered that anger and dipped into the deep pocket of sadness. They are choosing to honor us and our struggles; followed by the comfort they offer through this song.

These beautifully talented young women heal the wounds through song!
I believe dealing with this sadness is the only way to heal personally and as a nation! THANK YOU CELTIC WOMAN!!
    Love, Janean

  37. Every time we see Celtic Woman, we have come to expect nothing but the very best from them. Yet somehow, every time we see them, they are better still, than ever before. Better still, than we have even come to expect. "Oh America" is just more proof of that. How they keep getting better, I can't explain it. But, they do. When I first saw CW perform "Oh America" live on this current Tour, no different than anyone else in the audience, I'm sure, it brought tears to my eyes. Tears of joy. And tears of love. All can can say now is, you just want to take Alex, Chloe, Lisa, Lynn and Mairead and hug them. And with tears in your eyes, thank them. For what they have brought to us. For what they have given us over the past 5 years. They have always been and, they will always remain ... our Angels. ... Bill

  38. Everytime I think that Celtic Woman can't outdo themselves....they do! O America is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard, and one of the most patriotic songs ever. Being friends with Lisa and Chloe, I can attest to the fact that they really DO have an enormous love for our country. Lisa has told me how she cried on 9/11 and what a profound impact that day had on her. Thanks to David Downes for his great interpretation!

  43. A lot of people get patriotic when they hear a song extolling America, which is a good thing; it's always desirable to be proud of your homeland, whatever its faults may be. I have my own (very good) reasons, as an American, not to be caught up in this tune's overall message or get all weepy-eyed over it. That said, the lyrics are quite nice, the melody exquisite, and the ladies sing this tune as they do all others: perfectly. They're deserving of the acclaim; it's good of CW to thank a nation for propelling them into stardom. Jolly good job, ladies... :)

I respect your right to comment as you desire but please do not represent that you speak for 'all Americans'. I'm sorry you have only one event to look forward to from year to year and for your anger as expressed. However, this wonderful song does 'not' say America is weeping and I suspect there are many Americans who do not have a deep sadness or view the history of this great country, as you say you do.

  55. “When you believe a thing, believe it all the way, implicitly and unquestionably."

I felt pride and gratitude to see and hear Celtic Woman perform O America. They’ve always had the ability to tap into those currents than flow deep in us. Beautiful song, quite moving.

We’ve always been a nation of dreamers. The quote above is from a man who knew how to realize his dreams. He believed that courage and consistency were so important. He encouraged others to pursue their dreams.

He gave us a little guy named Mickey and believed in a young girl named Annette. And like many in America he had ancestors that emigrated from Ireland. And, like many, he often failed, but always persisted.

Songwriter Robert B. Sherman said about the last time he saw Walt Disney:

“He was up in the third floor of the animation building after a run-through of The Happiest Millionaire. He usually held court in the hallway afterward for the people involved with the picture. And he started talking to them, telling them what he liked and what they should change, and then, when they were through, he turned to us and with a big smile, he said, 'Keep up the good work, boys.' And he walked to his office. It was the last we ever saw of him.”

The image I will remember from this song is after Celtic Woman performed it. In silence, standing tall, a solemn moment. Reflecting a certain strength like this lady we call America.

She yearns to be fought for. To be pursued for her ideals of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. She has an adventure to share.

It is easy to take freedom for granted. Thanks to all the men and women who served in our military to protect our country and preserve our freedoms.

Thank you Celtic Woman for performing this song. I hope you come back again and again.

I believe in you too. Without question.

To borrow Walt’s words, “Keep up the good work, girls.”

I’ll leave with a few words John Denver once sang:

    Dream of a bright tomorrow
Know that your dream will come true
Carry your dream in a sparkling crystal jar
Then you will know the kind of gift you are

Make believe this is the first day
    Everything all brand new
Make believe that the sun is your own lucky star
And then understand the kind of gift you are

Like a candle in the night. You are a gift to us. Thanks so much.

    Lester

As your song so beautifully implies, we have both joy and pain in our struggles (as you have read in the comments, in our country, one's burden may be another's joy). But we are all seeking a peace that transcends our religious, economic and political diversity. This song and your music, as well as your continual “good-will mission” to us through your concert tours, continue to remind us how fortunate we are to live in this great land.

My great-grandfather left Ireland and came to America for economic reasons, and married a first-generation Irish beauty on these shores. Their daughter married a man whose father was Scottish, and whose mother was a Native American – a Cherokee princess. The stories they choose to remember and tell, are not about bloodshed and hopelessness, but about sacrifice and hope in their pursuit of freedom and happiness.

You renew their dreams and ours when you transcend our diversity with a music, an experience, and an attitude that serves to unite us rather than divide us. You have been adopted by us because of your love, sincerity and appreciation for our land, and the for the healing power of your words and songs. May God Bless Your Lives. With love and more, Brian

  63. With Obama (America"s greatest experiment gone wrong) we Americans are really scared of every new day with Obama as president. This song really fits the mood of all Americans right now, What a beautiful song, Thank-you so much.

  64. This song is beautiful. I play it over and over again. And as a Canadian, I am so touched that Celtic Woman would stay true and remember those who have put them where they are today.

I wish you would spend more time in Canada, and let us enjoy you more!

Chloe, Lisa and Mairead you are a wonderful foundation to a sound that has become so well known. My children even recognised a song being played at the mall the other day as you!

Lynn, you were a fantastic addition,as was Alex... and Alex you will be missed and I hope you will be around again soon whether with CW or on your own.

  66. I weep through every Celtic Woman performance that I see. When they sing O America, I am thinking about all of the wounded Americans through history: the indigenous aboriginal Americans who were here before America existed; the Americans who were once loyal to Britain, France, or Spain and who had to change loyalty by force or by choice to a bold new nation backed by nothing more tangible than hope and faith; the Americans who ancestors were chained and bound in the cargo hold of a slave ship and brought to an America that they did not choose; the Americans who chose to break away and form a separate American nation and the Americans who fought against them to preserve the original union of states with tremendous loss of life on both sides of the conflict; the Americans who chose to be Americans only because their original nations were destroyed by famine or war; and all the other wounded Americans whose ancestors were forced to be American through circumstances beyond their control, and whose pain and sorrow have been passed down from generation to generation. I see this song as a plea to let our broken hearts be healed and let us truly unite as one nation and one people.

  67. What a beautiful song. I agree that the emotion is palpable. American has changed so much it hurts. When I heard this song all I could think was that shes calling her people to hold true to her and all she stands for. I can only pray this happens. This song gives me hope. Thank you ladies. I love my country and you. A very special and sincere thanks to Brendan Graham and William Joseph for writing a song that expresses something that I myself could not put into words. Something that shows only in love and tears.

  68. I'm proud to be an American. You don't have to be. If you don't like it, I'm sorry. I didn't say America is perfect, I know it's not. But I'm still proud to call this country home. "I'm proud to be an American where at least I know I'm free, and I won't forget the men who died who gave that right to me."

  71. First time heard this great song during a fireworks show in Atlantic City NJ this 4th of July. I was very moved to tears by the inspiration and dedication to our country . Even though not allowed as a current service member to have any political opinion (and that’s bye not what this song is about) it DOES fit very good into our current situations as Americans. We have to start to distinguish between our great nation which this song is about and the US Government , America is great and always will be great, the greatest country in the world! This song gave me so much inspiration back, listening to its lyrics... let’s hope that we WILL heal from what is happening right now in our great nation, nobody can and will destroy the faith of us Americans in our country, not even a representative who should not represent us as Americans.

Again thank u for this song

  73. This songs lyrics talks about our country state of being today in 2021.
Our country is crying as our citizens are being torn apart from each other because of politics and the media.
Our country is calling out for help.
It took Irish singers from the other side of the pond to bring awareness to the sadness we know better as America.
This certainly could be our anthem as we desperately need to come together under God, indivisible for liberty and justice for all. We the people of the United States
